De Troffel is the incentive prize of Festival Cement that is awarded annually to the best concept for a performance, performance or text by a starting maker. This year, the year in which the festival could not go ahead due to the corona measures, we are awarding the prize again.
From the 54 entries, eight concepts were selected by a reading committee. Yesterday, June 10 2020, the makers below pitched their plans. Not physically and not during the festival, but via video, post, construction kit or whatever the makers deemed suitable. This year the jury consisted of Ingrid Vranken, Mats van Herreweghe and Katja Heitmann.
We are pleased to announce that De Troffel 2020 has been won by:
Courtney May Robertson – THE WOMAN DESTROYED
From the jury report:
“The jury finds the concept contemporary, current and relevant. Courtney has found a delicate and thorough language to talk about the theme of technology and people. She demonstrates extensive research. It is precisely the complexity of the fact that she does not want to talk about people versus technology, but about people versus people that is interesting. The fact that technology / the algorithm is made by people, and that the binary opposition between people and technology is unraveled fascinates the jury.”
The Troffel is a prize of €7,500 with which young theatre makers receive financial support to further develop their winning project plan. The winner will also receive an invitation to show the progress or realization of his or her plan during Festival Cement 2021.
